A review of The Sorrow of War by Bao Ninh soorrow Kien recalls his youth, his early years in the military, a time ten years after he entered the war, events Kien is a survivor of the Viet Nam war, a North Vietnamese survivor. A book about writing, about lost youth, it is also a beautiful, agonizing love story. He returned time and time again to his love, his friendship, his comradeship, those boa bonds which had all helped us overcome the thousand sufferings of the war.
Then, he worked to retrieve bodies and have them identified so that their families could re-bury them with their ancestors. Chef and Thai food expert David Thompson also includes plenty of interesting history and reportage about the street food of the kingdom. There is a force at work in him that he cannot resist, as though it opposes every orthodox attitude taught him and it is now his task to expose the realities of war and to tear aside conventional images.
His central relationship is with his childhood sweetheart Phuong and one wonders here whether the name is merely a very common Vietnamese given name or if there might be an echo of The Quiet American at play here. In his piece, he describes reading the book and floating above his bed. Shifting from first to third person, with the occasional second person letter, the story is as unstructured as the lives involved. It should win the Pulitzer Prize. Perhaps Ninh did this intentionally to osrrow the reality of the world seen through the eyes of Kien.
Interesting that the returned soldiers received the same disinterested reception as their American and allies received.
The Sorrow of War I felt the ssorrow was stronger than the rest of the novel. I really wanted to fall in love with this book, but the writing style made it impossible for me. He is less forthright about his decision to forgo publishing his bso novel, claiming that he has written almost constantly since as the editor of a literary weekly in Hanoi.
